The Myth of Nullsec News

EVE Online articles per year in nine independent gaming outlets (Massively OP, MMORPG.com, PC Gamer, Polygon, Kotaku, Eurogamer, Rock Paper Shotgun, IGN and GamesRadar+), 2020 to 7 Oct 2026, and how many of them were about nullsec wars, sovereignty and alliance politics. Everything else about CCP's products (EVE Online, EVE Frontier, EVE Vanguard, Fanfest, corporate news) is the comparison bar.

Chris (CeemaGPT), a CSM 21 candidate, publishes this page on his campaign site. Claude, an AI model made by Anthropic, did the counting from the outlets' own archives; every source is on the Sources tab. Reddit, Wikipedia and player-run news sites are left out.

1,122EVE product articles, 2020 to Oct 2026, nine outlets
61of them about nullsec wars and politics
5.4%nullsec share across the whole period
9.4%highest yearly share (2020, World War Bee 2)

Articles per year: all EVE products vs nullsec

All EVE product articlesNullsec war and politics

2026 covers 1 Jan to 7 Oct only. 2020 to 2022 MMORPG.com totals are estimates from paged archives; PC Gamer's archive shows one item for 2024, so that year is a lower bound.

Nullsec share of EVE coverage, by year

Peaks line up with wars: World War Bee 2 (2020 to 2021), the X47L-Q fight (2023) and the 2026 keepstar battles. Between wars the share drops to 1 or 2%.

By outlet

* Massively OP counts are EVE-primary articles only. Its EVE tag also carries site-wide columns, roundups and podcasts that merely mention EVE (941 tagged posts in the period, about 60% EVE-primary); counting those would inflate the non-nullsec bar.

What was counted

  • Outlets: Massively OP (WordPress API, EVE tag, per calendar year), MMORPG.com (EVE news archive, headlines read page by page; 2020 to 2022 partly interpolated), PC Gamer (EVE tag archive, curated and incomplete).
  • "Nullsec" rule: the headline is about a sovereignty war, a nullsec battle or structure kill, a coalition forming, moving or collapsing, a record loss, or war analysis. CCP's nullsec design news (Equinox, force projection) is not counted as nullsec; it sits with the product articles.
  • "All EVE product articles": every article about EVE or CCP, which includes EVE Frontier, EVE Vanguard, EVE Echoes, expansions, Fanfest, patches, monetisation stories, Pearl Abyss earnings and the CCP sale and Fenris rename.
  • Excluded on purpose: Reddit; Wikipedia and its reference lists; alliance-owned media (INN, imperium.news); community sites and blogs written by EVE players (EN24, New Eden Post, The Nosy Gamer, The Ancient Gaming Noob); mainstream press (BBC, Guardian, Wired), where no 2020 to 2026 nullsec story was found; YouTube, Twitch, podcasts and Discord.
  • Six more outlets (the "Six others" column): Polygon, Kotaku, Eurogamer, Rock Paper Shotgun, IGN and GamesRadar+, counted by headline from tag pages, archived copies and site searches. Together they ran about 123 EVE articles in the period, 13 of them nullsec, and every one of the 13 dates from 2020 to April 2023. Their figures are lower bounds: Polygon and Kotaku lost most of their EVE tagging when they changed owners, IGN dates are partly estimated, and IGN video-only pages are left out. Rock Paper Shotgun and Eurogamer are the most complete.
Reading the result

In the gaming press, nullsec wars are a small, bursty slice of EVE coverage: a record battle gets one to three stories per outlet in a week, then nothing until the next one. CCP's own calendar drives the volume, with two expansions a year, Fanfest, Vanguard and Frontier test cycles and corporate news. A single Fanfest week at Massively OP produces more articles than a year of nullsec war. "Biggest content" may hold for EVE's economy and its largest organised groups, but it does not describe what gaming media writes about.
